Children's health, bicycle riding and Public Libraries

April 2, 2009

Yesterday, I went bicycle riding in the Iowa countryside with my son.

Good for the body's health, good for mental health, emotional health, earth-friendly, good all around.

Look at that happy face!

Does this look like a man who needs Transcendental Meditation?

After bicycling in the countryside, the kids and I went to the Public Library.

One of the amazing benefits that come with owning your own website, is that you can indulge in your passion for showing pictures of your adorable children, regardless of how annoying this practice may be to others!

I've lived in various cities in Canada and in the U.S., and I have to say that Fairfield, Iowa is by far the most charming, blissful, amazing town I've ever lived in, BUT:

BUT right now I need to talk about the Fairfield Public Library, and "bring it down to a more realistic level, as it were", as is so aptly described by Robin Williams in this 1-minute video:

Back on topic.

Sara and I are using the Public Library computer in the children's section. The games already installed on that computer aren't all that much fun, and so we think (OK, I think) "Why don't we get online instead and visit some of the fun educational children websites that are out there? There's hundreds of them!"

I notice that there is an "Internet Exploder" icon on the desktop (I guess some people still use this to browse), so we click on it and launch the browser.

No internet connection. Nothing. I try the computer next to me. No internet.

I get up and ask the Public Library employee sitting at the desk in the children section whether those computers are supposed to be connected to the internet. She looks at me with a cold stare and answers "No, they're not connected to the internet."

I look at her in disbelief and say "Hum... WHY NOT?"

She replies that because adults would sometimes use the children's computers to access the internet, the children's computers are no longer connected to the internet. I tell her that in my opinion it would make more sense to connect the computers to the internet and simply put up a sign that says "These computers are reserved for children use only."

The Public Library employee then tells me that "the Public Library Board has until the end of 2010 to 'review their policy' regarding internet use on children's Public Library computers".

"Until the end of 2010?" I ask.

Anyway, this woman scares me. I try not to dwell on the fact that my tax dollars pay her salary and I ask her "Do you realize how long that is? That's 20 MONTHS FROM NOW! We'll all be flying around in spaceships by then!"

It seems today that anything run by the government is in shambles. It's as if the people who work for the government live in their own little worlds, where everything is either stagnant or moves veryyyyy slooooowly.

This is readily noticeable when you go to places like the Post Office, Public Libraries, or the DMV.

The degree of backwardness and obsolescence appears to be directly correlated with the number of capital letters used in the name of an organization.

My son has had an iPhone ever since the iPhone came out almost 2 years ago.

Yesterday while we were sitting in the middle of the woods, having a father-and-son talk, he found out that his bid on an eBay auction he'd been following, was the winning bid.

Sitting on a big rock in the middle of the woods, he then paid for the item from his iPhone, we enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and the chirping birds for a while longer, then got on our bicycles and rode away.

children healing His 5-year old little sister has a netbook which is about 100 times more powerful than the first computer I bought back in 1985 (an Atari with a cassette tape player to load programs).

And the children's computers at the Public Library where I live do not have access to the internet?

I don't plan to spend any more time with the kids at the Public Library. I will be taking them to more fun places like parks and nature trails.

Somewhere we can access the internet.
