Children's health, bicycle riding and Public LibrariesApril 2, 2009
After bicycling in the countryside, the kids and I went to the Public Library.
BUT right now I need to talk about the Fairfield Public Library, and "bring it down to a more realistic level, as it were", as is so aptly described by Robin Williams in this 1-minute video:
Back on topic. Sara and I are using the Public Library computer in the children's section. The games already installed on that computer aren't all that much fun, and so we think (OK, I think) "Why don't we get online instead and visit some of the fun educational children websites that are out there? There's hundreds of them!" I notice that there is an "Internet Exploder" icon on the desktop (I guess some people still use this to browse), so we click on it and launch the browser. No internet connection. Nothing. I try the computer next to me. No internet. I get up and ask the Public Library employee sitting at the desk in the children section whether those computers are supposed to be connected to the internet. She looks at me with a cold stare and answers "No, they're not connected to the internet." I look at her in disbelief and say "Hum... WHY NOT?" She replies that because adults would sometimes use the children's computers to access the internet, the children's computers are no longer connected to the internet. I tell her that in my opinion it would make more sense to connect the computers to the internet and simply put up a sign that says "These computers are reserved for children use only."
"Until the end of 2010?" I ask.
It seems today that anything run by the government is in shambles. It's as if the people who work for the government live in their own little worlds, where everything is either stagnant or moves veryyyyy slooooowly.
And the children's computers at the Public Library where I live do not have access to the internet? I don't plan to spend any more time with the kids at the Public Library. I will be taking them to more fun places like parks and nature trails. Somewhere we can access the internet.
